Yuzawa, also known by its full name of Echigo Yuzawa, is a popular resort town located in the southern part of Niigata Prefecture, about 200km to the north of Tokyo.  Surrounded by spectacular mountains, many people come to Yuzawa throughout the year for its natural beauty, onsen hot springs and many ski resorts. The famous natural hot springs ( onsen ) of Yuzawa town were founded over 800 years ago. These can be found all over Yuzawa, Yuzawa onsen water is weak alkaline, and is said to have great healing qualities. Most people go, however, just for the great relaxing feeling that they provide. There are onsen in almost all hotels and lodges in Yuzawa town as well as a number of public onsen that anyone can try out.  People walking around the main “onsen dori” of the town - the place where most of the restaurants and bars are, from the west exit of the station - just in yukata are a very common sight.  Everyone looks the same.  Maybe that’s the point.  But this sight certainly makes for an interesting atmosphere in the town on cool evenings.

The Yuzawa Kogen ropeway’s capacity of 166 people made it the largest in the world when it was built 6 years ago.  The ropeway is situated a 10 minute walk away from the station or only a 3 minute drive away.  The ropeway cars take you on a journey to the top of Yuzawa Kogen.  The ropeway operates all year, and in the summer months there is a “moonlight service” which operates in the evenings.
